DEAL DONE! Retail, Hessle

A new post office will open in Hessle next month, it has been announced.Gary Mitchell stepped in after the existing franchise located in the Spa supermarket, in The Square, expired. The new post office will be situated on the site of the former Bubbles store in Prestongate, which is just 200 yards away in a deal brokered by local agent NT3 Commercial.

Mr Mitchell said: "I believe in the Post Office and I wanted to take on the franchise.  I had to present a viable business plan and go through quite a rigorous application.  It's been an awful lot of work and has taken a lot of dedication.” Post Office Counters Limited advertised the franchise, but there were concerns the town would be left without a branch.  In February, Mr Mitchell announced he would be taking over the service after a six-week public consultation period.  The new branch will open for business on May 10 and all six staff members from The Square branch are to be retained.

Mr Mitchell has signed a 15-year lease on the building negotiated for the Landlord by Chris Noble of city centre agents NT3.  In addition, Gary has signed a five-year franchise deal with Post Office Counter Ltd – a wholly owned subsidiary of Royal Mail Group – which is renewable every two years.  He said: "The length of the lease gives the business more stability.  The post office are happy I've committed to this."

Mr Mitchell, who is also sub-post master in Cottingham, added: "The post office is the hub of the village in Cottingham and I see Hessle as being very similar.  "The post office has a lot to offer and I think the people of Hessle will react very positively to the new service."

Chris Noble comments 'We at NT3 are very pleased to have been involved in the letting of this unit on Prestongate for the Landlord.  We worked very closely with Gary and with the Post Office over a period of time to help to ensure the future of Hessle Post Office in the town.  Relocation to a more central area and closer to the bus stop will improve the Post Office service for the local population, and enhance the retail offer of Hessle generally in our view.  It's good news for Hessle, and we wish Gary all the best for the future - and look forward to the grand opening on May 10th
